Math - Reginald Dawson Memorial Tournament
The Reginald Dawson Memorial Math Tournament is an academic competition for third and fourth-grade students. Participants compete both individually and as part of third-grade and fourth-grade school teams.
Since its start in 2012, the tournament has encouraged the development of math skills and prepares students for future competitions like the Penny Sikes Tournament for fifth and sixth-grades and the Georgia Southern University Tournament for middle and high school students. At the Dawson event, the school district's nine elementary schools compete in individual computation and team ciphering skills.
The Reggie Dawson Memorial Math Tournament was named for a former Statesboro High School educator whose life and career were cut tragically short when he lost his battle with cancer in 2010. Local math teachers wanted to honor his memory and the excellent example he set for team work and academic excellence by naming the tournament in his memory.
Julia P. Bryant Elementary School’s Math Department founded the tournament and organizes the event, which is open to teams from any public, private or home schools in Bulloch County. The Bulloch County Foundation for Public Education has sponsored the tournament since its formation with annual innovation grants of $1,000.
